How often do you go to a trade show or business meeting and collect more than a dozen business cards? Too many of them get thrown away or tossed in a drawer to never again see the light of day. What you need to do is create a memorable and effective business card that will not only stand out, but will also represent you and your trade.

There is no question that your business card shares vital contact information, from your phone number and email address to your company website in order to emphasize your online presence. Yet there is so much more that a top-notch one can relay. It is a marketing tool, so supply images and/or content that resonates in a consumer’s mind. It can also give others a taste of your personality, not unlike a TV or radio commercial. Including a personal photograph on your card allows individuals to stand out in a crowd.

Some folks like to make their cards the standard size, confirming that it will fit into any wallet or fancy case. Others prefer to invest a little more for unconventional ones that are anything but boring to grab somebody’s attention. You can insert stencils or a tab at the top, allowing your card to pop out and catch a person’s eye. Another technique is to insert a 3-dimensional face that extends forward with the name on your card. Rather than a traditional business card, you may want to hand out a small toy that can serve as a desk ornament. Car dealers can give out toy convertibles, while the owner of a bakery can give some out that resemble gingerbread cookies. A physical therapist can stretch his or her imagination and create an elastic card from plastic. Otherwise, you can create a card that is useful, such as a small ruler for an architect. Remember to pass out your cards on a regular basis. In a restaurant, leave your business card with the tip and enclose some when you send any piece of mail.

Businessmen and women should also take advantage of both sides of a business card. Why not utilize all of the card’s space to its fullest potential? You can make the most of the second side by adding a special photograph, cartoon, slogan or coupon. Do everything you can to prevent your card from getting tossed in the garbage. Even more important, don’t leave home without your informative and catchy business card.
