The Somali Diaspora makes a major contribution to the Somali economy and livelihoods through remittances, humanitarian assistance and participation in recovery and reconstruction efforts. Without this support, the economy of the country would have collapsed long ago.

Nevertheless, the scale of assistance from the Somali Diaspora and the manner in which their support is delivered on the ground has been phenomenal and the international development community have become spectators watching the somali diaspora’s power of the purse put to practice.

For the last twenty years the somalia diaspora has contributed more than 100 billion in aid and remittences back to their home country a staggering figure which dwarfs any assistance or loans granted to somalia by the International community in the last 50 years.

humanitarian, recovery and development efforts, youth empowering initiatives, shelter homes for the orphans, remittences to families, support for the displaced mothers and children, massive investments in local business, and the list goes on….

A partial survey of organized Somali Diaspora networks formed part of a study, Based on the findings of the study, a workshop explored possible mechanisms for engagement between the Diaspora and development partners, and made recommendations to enhance the achievement of their common developmental goals.
