When it comes to mobile phones, Somalia is truly undergoing a revolution. A new study shows that Somalia is the first country to have more mobile users than fixed-line subscribers. Mobile phones have revolutionised Somalia during the last few years: more Somalis have begun using phones since the year 2000 than in the whole of the previous century.
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) presented new statistics on the telecom sector in Somalia at the recent Africa Telecom conference held in Cairo. According to the ITU survey, Somalia has also become the fastest-growing mobile phone market. Over the past five years the country’s mobile phone use has increased at an annual rate of 65 percent, which is twice the global average. This is good news for telecom investors in Somalia.
