Business leaders in Somalia have called on Somalis in the Diaspora to see the current economic realities in the country as good opportunities for them to participate actively in the ongoing efforts to rebuild the nation’s economy.

The Somali diaspora has a key role to play at this critical time. “What Somalia needs now is Economic Patriotism that will support the efforts to rebuild the nation.”

Somalis must never become so comfortable abroad that we forget or worse still despise our roots. Rebuilding Somalia is an important mission for the next generation, who deserve the chance of a Somalia that provides opportunities for them.”

Other diaspora communities retain strong links to their motherland and we must do so in order to retain the fabric of our families and our value system.”

Remittances are a key part of our national income and this points to the strong family ties that form the fabric of Somalia’s society and this we must not lose sight of.  As diaspora remittances are very stable it is also important that they are channelled into investment products and opportunities that will encourage business and job creation for the highly unemployed Somali youth.

Somalia is a country of youth where 70% of the population is under 30 years old, a generation of patriots where the talk of a “kacaan” revolution is always a topic But whether this patriotism can be channelled into an ecomonic and a industrial revolution the Somali diaspora can and will play a huge part.
