The Puntland Petroleum and Mineral Agency“will not accept the legitimacy of an attempt to erode the sovereignty of Somalia,” Isse Mohamed Farah, the body’s director, said in an e-mailed response to questions. “It is wrong for the UN to impose a moratorium on a nation that is now out of civil war and ready to develop politically and economically.”

Somalia’s federal government has also rejected the suggestion. But the question on everyone’s lips is that; is somalia ready to develop its vast resources and sign contracts with multi-national energy companies before it has truely recovered from the instability which has devastated the country’s institutions and governing structures? There’s not a clear cut answer to this questions and the somali street is divided on this issue, Some argue that we should start developing the resources sector now to help the country gain much needed funds to rebuild the nation, while others would argue a deal signed now would amount to adding fuel to the fire we have just managed to put off after it had engulfed the nation for 20 some odd years.
