If you enjoy, or think you would enjoy, the freedom that living aboard a sailboat will give you… You will be pleased when you discover that living aboard a sailboat does not require a lot of money.
We lived on a sailboat in the Caribbean for eight wonderful years and we know how little it costs.
Let’s compare what you would spend living in a house versus living in a sailboat.
Instead of a mortgage payment or rent… Assuming your boat is paid for… You have eliminated these expenses… Anchoring is free remember. Let’s look at commuting costs… Your car requires fuel, maintenance and the cost to insure it. The stress of driving in traffic… Well you can put a cost on that if you like.
If you live on a boat your “commute”, is replaced by what it costs you to operate your dinghy… If you row your dinghy your cost of commuting or zero, plus you get the exercise. If you have an outboard motor on your dinghy, your cost for gasoline are minimal when compared to a gas hungry car getting you to and from work. No tollbooths on the water. How about clothing costs? Suits, dress shirts, ties, belts,, dresses, blouses, leather shoes are replaced by an occasional new T-shirt swim trunks or straw beach hat. Waterproof sandals for your footwear do not require shining.
